Union Village Plans for Intergenerational Households
Housing developers are planning for a growing number of intergenerational households, as more families have at least two adult generations under the same roof. At Union Village, a 1,230-acre new urban community under construction in Warren County, developers are taking into account needs such as access to senior services.
According to Pew Research, more than 20 percent of the U.S. population is living in an intergenerational home, a trend new urban developers are watching closely.
“While new urbanism is not explicitly about seniors, it is about intergenerational senior living,” said Lynn Richards, president and CEO of the Congress for the New Urbanism. “That’s because it functions based on the 8-to-80 principle: a community must be built specifically to serve eight-year-olds, 80-year-olds and everyone in between.”
Richards’ comments and a profile on Union Village were included in “The New Opportunity in Intergenerational Senior Living,” a report published by Senior Housing News.
Union Village developers expect to build 30 new homes in 2019, and up to 4,500 homes in the next four decades. The community will also have 1 million square feet of commercial space including retail, restaurants and business offices, and a 200-acre greenway system of meadows, woodland parks and pathways. More than 25 percent of the development will be green space.
Union Village Development Company was founded in late 2015 as a wholly-owned, for profit subsidiary of the non-profit Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices. New Urban Development Partners, LLC, renown for award-winning new urban projects, will be managing the development of Union Village.
